10 years ago (2009), Russia concluded an agreement on military cooperation with South Ossetia and Abkhazia, providing for the creation of Russian military bases in these republics.

The Agreement was signed by the Defense Minister of the Russian Federation Anatoly Serdyukov, as well as the heads of the military departments of South Ossetia and Abkhazia Yuri Tanaev and Merab Kishmaria.

On May 29, 2018, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Republic of South Ossetia agreed on mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the embassy level.

The signed communiqué noted that the two countries were striving "towards the establishment and development of full-scale political, economic and cultural cooperation." It is emphasized that the actions of the countries will comply with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of April 18, 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of April 23, 1963.
