The date of August 14 in Abkhazia is forever inscribed in the history of the republic as the day of the beginning of the Patriotic War of the Abkhaz people of 1992-1993. This was noted by President of South Ossetia Alan Gagloev in his telegram to the head of Abkhazia Badra Gunba with words of support on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of the Fatherland.
Gagloev has emphasized that on this day South Ossetia, together with its Abkhaz brothers and sisters, is bowing its heads before the bright memory of those who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of Abkhazia.
"We remember everyone who stood up with arms in hand to defend their land, who did not spare themselves for the sake of the future generation. Among those who were fighting were also volunteers from South Ossetia, who came to support the Abkhaz people in a difficult hour,” the telegram reads.
The 1992-1993 war became a tragic page in the history of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Gagloev continued.
He has reminded that thousands of people were killed, wounded, and became refugees.
“But despite all the difficulties and hardships, we defended our freedom, and we are doing everything possible to prevent a repeat of the war. Eternal memory to the heroes perished in the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia. Peace and prosperity to the Republic of Abkhazia,” the leader of the Republic of South Ossetia has concluded.
