The South Ossetian Foreign Ministry sent a note of sympathy and support to the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry in connection with Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Lata Tragedy in the Republic, the Foreign Ministry's press service reported.
"Recalling the horrific events of December 14, 1992, we are once again remembering one of the most monstrous pages of the war—the deliberate extermination of civilians," the note reads.
The Foreign Ministry has noted that this act constitutes not only a war crime and a gross violation of all norms of international humanitarian law, but also a blatant manifestation of the policy of genocide against the Abkhaz people.
On December 14, 1992, the Georgian State Council troops shot down the Russian MI-8 helicopter evacuating women and children from the town of Tkuarchal, which was besieged by the Georgian occupiers. All passengers and crew on the board were killed.
More than 80 people, including 35 children, were killed.
