The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia issued a statement on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the adoption of the Act of Declaration of Independence and the establishment of the republic's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry has reminded that on May 28-29, 1992, at the height of Georgia's armed aggression, a session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia adopted the historic Act of Declaration of Independence, based on the will of the people expressed in the referendum.

"This historic step was dictated by the need to establish our own statehood as the only means of protecting the rights and freedoms of our people," the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reads

At the same session, the first Council of Ministers was formed, which included the Ministry of Foreign Relations (renamed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2002).

The diplomats emphasized that the creation of a separate service became a necessary attribute of the independent state and played a key role in its development.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia has noted that the strong-willed decisions of the leaders of those years laid the foundation for the country's further development, which ultimately led to the international recognition of the Republic's independence in 2008.

"Today, remembering these important milestones, we are looking back with pride on the path we have passed and honor the memory of those who stood at the origins of our independence and gave their lives for the freedom and future of South Ossetia," the Ministry has emphasized.
