A ceremony of laying a garland of Memory and Glory, flowers and wreaths at the Eternal Flame took place on the Walk of Fame in the capital of South Ossetia.
The event was attended by the leadership of the Republic, headed by Prime Minister Konstantin Dzhussoev, Russian Ambassador Marat Kulakhmetov, representatives of the ministries and departments, members of Parliament and city residents.
After the ceremony of laying flowers at the Eternal Flame, Dzhussoev addressed those present, having noted that here, at the Eternal Flame, the memory of the heroes who gave their lives for a bright future would be forever remembered and honored.
"We must remember and respect the heroism, unparalleled courage, fortitude and dedication of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers," Dzhussoev said.
He also noted the enormous losses suffered during the war.
"Eternal glory and a deep bow to the generation of victors! The victory in the Great Patriotic War came at the cost of enormous losses," the Prime Minister said. "South Ossetia also made an invaluable contribution to the victory over fascism. More than 22 thousand residents, which is almost every fifth Ossetian, went to the front and were fighting against fascism."
He has added that the people of Ossetia bow before the courage and valor of the front-line soldiers, home front workers, dear veterans and all who defended their common homeland from the Nazi invaders.
Dzhussoev has assured those gathered that the feat of the veterans will never be forgotten.
"We will be passing on the memory of heroism from generation to generation," the Prime Minister said.
The head of government has also noted that the descendants of veterans continue the work of their grandfathers today.
"As 80 years ago, shoulder to shoulder with Russian soldiers, they are defending our common homeland. The valor, courage and unparalleled bravery of the descendants of the victors give us confidence that victory will be ours again," he has concluded.
