South Ossetia will honor the memory of the victims of the August War

South Ossetia will host commemorative events dedicated to the 18th anniversary of the Georgian aggression against the Republic in August 2008.

As reported to IA Red by the republican commission for the preparation and holding of nationally significant events, the commemorative program will begin on August 1.

In the lead-up to the anniversary, the republican media will publish materials about the August 2008 events, as well as archival photos and videos, documentaries, and memoirs dedicated to the defenders of South Ossetia and the tragic events of the war.

A solemn mourning ceremony will be held at 10:00 PM on August 7 at the "Defenders of South Ossetia" memorial complex. The participants will include the republican leadership, representatives of the ministries and agencies, and the public. On August 8 at 9:00 AM, memorial services for the victims of the August War will be held at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church of the Holy Trinity. The Republic's leadership and parishioners will participate in the services," the commission has noted.

On the same day, at 11:00 AM, the official flower-laying ceremony will begin at the places where Ossetia's defenders perished.

Flowers will be laid at the peacekeepers' barracks, the place of the death of Hero of Russia Oleg Galavanov and Denis Vetchinov, the monument to the fallen riot police officers, the "Museum of Burnt Souls" memorial, and the monument to Amiran Bagaev and Azamat Dzhioev.

It will also be honored the memory of the heroes of the resistance to Georgian aggression – Vilen Chibirov, Viktor Tadtaev, and Vladislav Gazzaev – on Geroev Street. Flowers will also be laid at the monument to Budyonnovsky Regiment pilot Vladimir Yedamenko on the road to the serrlement of Dzau.

Over the next two days, memorial events will be held in the Republic to preserve the memory of the events of August 2008 and the fallen defenders of South Ossetia.
