At the initiative of the Georgian delegation a clause calling on the Syrian authorities to withdraw their recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia was included in the final declaration of the 32nd session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly held in Portugal. The South Ossetian Foreign Ministry commented on the adopted declaration, regretfully noting Georgia's unwillingness to accept the political realities existing in the Transcaucasia region.

"Republic of South Ossetia has been a sovereign independent state for 35 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and since 2008 it has been recognized by the Russian Federation and other UN member states. This is a fact that cannot be ignored for the sake of Georgia's political interests. Building friendly relations between South Ossetia and Abkhazia and other states, including Syria, cannot in any way depend on Tbilisi's position," the statement of the Ministry reads.

The Foreign Ministry has stressed that such inappropriate calls are regarded as continuation of the official Tbilisi's provocative attempts to isolate South Ossetia and Abkhazia internationally.
