South Ossetia hopes for a future railway connection with Russia, and the Republic would support such a project, South Ossetian Foreign Minister Akhsar Dzhioev told RIA Novosti.
He has noted that currently, only a highway connects South Ossetia and Russia, but any transport artery connecting the two countries is of great importance. The launch of a railway connection, however, requires the expert assessment and political decisions, he has added.
"We can't yet assess how feasible this is, as the project is so large-scale. South Ossetia alone wouldn't be able to handle it for financial reasons. But we hope that such a road will be built in the future.
There were discussions about this in 2008, but for now, it seems to be a very challenging project even for the Russian side. We haven't lost hope. If its implementation proves feasible, we will support it," the Minister said.
