In South Ossetia, the work is nearing completion on the memorial dedicated to one of the most tragic chapters in the Republic's history—the Ered tragedy.As the Honored Artist of the Republic of South Ossetia Robert Khubaev told reporters, the monument was created in cooperation with the outstanding master, the People's Artist of South Ossetia Sarmat Zasseev, who, unfortunately, did not live to see the project's completion.
"Unfortunately, Sarmat is no longer with us; he was a very good man and master. We worked together on this project, pouring our hearts into it. I remember how, I confess, we men were moved to tears more than once during the creation of the monument. There are so many tragic pages in the history of South Ossetia, and the Ered tragedy is one of the most painful," Khubaev has shared.
The work is currently in its final stages.
According to the artist, the memorial has already received high praise from those who have seen it.
The central element of the composition is 12 figures symbolizing the civilians buried alive in 1991. A special place in the memorial is given to a sculpture of a hand reaching for a bell.
The opening of the complex is planned to coincide with a significant date: May 29, the Day of the Adoption of the Act of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia.
Khubaev expressed his gratitude to the Republic's leadership.
"I would like to express my deep gratitude to President Alan Gagloev for this historic decision on the 35th anniversary of the tragedy, as well as to Minister of Culture Grigory Mamiev. This is extremely significant for the entire Ossetia. We remember the names of the victims of the Ered tragedy and sacredly honor their memory," the artist has emphasized.
The memorial in the village of Irykau (Ered) will become not only a place of mourning, but also a symbol of eternal memory of the victims whose lives were cut short as a result of the brutal crime of 1991.
