The South Ossetian Foreign Ministry called the statement on behalf of the European Union regarding Brussels' intentions to "work" with the Syrian People's Assembly to reconsider Damascus's sovereign decisions and to pressure the Syrian leadership to reverse its recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
"We regard such rhetoric from the EU as gross interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. The European Union, which verbally declares its commitment to the principles of international law and respect for state sovereignty, is in fact attempting to dictate to independent Syria which foreign policy decisions it should make and which it should annul," the Ministry's statement reads.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that Syria's recognition of South Ossetia in 2018 was an act of free will by a sovereign state, based on objective historical reality and the right of peoples to self-determination.
"This decision was made in strict accordance with international law and is not subject to revision under pressure from external forces," the Ministry added, emphasizing that Brussels' attempts to use economic or political leverage to revise the existing geopolitical realities in the South Caucasus appear futile and counterproductive.
The South Ossetian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the European Union to address the real reasons that led to the Republic's recognition of independence, namely, Tbilisi's aggressive policy, which in 2008 brought the South Ossetian people to the brink of physical annihilation.
