South Ossetia's Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Znaur Gassiev, sent an appeal to all diplomatic missions accredited in Russia, as well as to the Georgian Interests Section at the Swiss Embassy, in connection with the 18th anniversary of Russia's recognition of South Ossetia's independence.

In his message, Gassiev emphasized Russia's strategic role as "a great power and a reliable partner, firmly committed to protecting peace and security in the region."

He has reminded that Russia's decision to recognize South Ossetia's independence on August 26, 2008, was made in accordance with the will of the Republic's people and the principles of international law, becoming "the only possible response to the current situation" following Georgia's military aggression on August 8, 2008.

"This noble and responsible step by fraternal Russia has given the people of South Ossetia guarantees not just of security, but of the very right to life and further development," Znaur Gassiev has noted.

He described this event as a "landmark" that marked the end of years of tension and direct threat, and as a clear testament to the unwavering resilience and genuine courage of the people of South Ossetia.

The Ambassador expressed the Ossetian people's profound gratitude to the Russian leadership and the entire nation for their determination in averting the threat in August 2008. He also emphasized the Russian leadership's repeated statements that the recognition of the Republic's independence is "a reflection of the current reality and this course is not subject to revision."

Znaur Gassiev reminded the key stages in the development of interstate relations between South Ossetia and Russia:

September 9, 2008 – establishment of diplomatic relations.

September 18, 2008 – Signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance.

March 18, 2015 – Signing of the Treaty of Alliance and Integration, cementing the strategic partnership.

On May 9, 2026, the Agreement on Deepening Allied Cooperation between the two countries was signed in Moscow.

In concluding his address, Ambassador Gassiev has emphasized that for 18 years, South Ossetia has convincingly demonstrated to the international community that it is capable not only of reliably defending its independence but also of consistently building the foundations of a full-fledged democratic state.

He has noted that, thanks to Russia's extensive support, the Republic is confidently advancing along the path of state-building, consistently increasing its economic potential and carefully developing its rich cultural heritage.
